Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: Is building a wood bow hard?

  • A: Our classes are designed for first-time bow-builders. Youth and adults alike. Beginners can rest assured the KMC Archery bow building class is not very labor-intensive, it's just time intensive. This also depends on the bow you want to build. The harder the wood is the more intensive the bow-building process is. In our class, we teach you everything from A-Z for the best experience.

  • Q: Do you offer traditional archery lessons?

  • A: Yes we do please send us an email if you would like to schedule lessons.

  • Q: What bow should I build as a beginner.

  • A: A flatbow, longbow, English longbow, or Viking bows are good beginner bows. We offer all of these bows for you to build. All tools, materials and instructions are provided!

  • Q: What bow is good for an experienced archer?

  • A: A Osage recurve bow, black locust hunting bow, bamboo and Osage recurve bow are good challenging bows to build and have great performance.

  • Q: How long does a wood bow last?

  • A: It's hard to say exactly how long a wooden archery bow will last. It depends on the archer, their technique, and what they shoot (wooden archery bows aren't intended for heavy use). Most archers can expect their wooden archery bow to last between 20-30 years if moderately used. It can last over a lifetime if you take care of it.

  • Q: What is a recurve bow?

  • A: A recurve bow is one of the main shapes a bow can take, with limbs that curve away from the archer when unstrung. A recurve bow stores more energy and delivers energy more efficiently than the equivalent straight-limbed bow, giving a greater amount of energy and speed to the arrow. A recurve will permit a shorter bow than the simple straight limb bow for given arrow energy, and this form was often preferred by archers in environments where long weapons could be cumbersome, such as in brush and forest terrain.

  • Q: Is a bow considered a weapon?

  • A: A bow and arrows archery set is classified as sporting equipment.

  • Q: What type of arrows do I need?

  • A: Arrow shaft are wooden sticks with feathers on the end. They're typically made from fiberglass or carbon graphite. Archers recommend getting aluminum arrows, as they're less expensive and just as effective as other types of materials. Carbon fiber arrows are more expensive but more effective than other arrow types. Wood arrows are the least expensive and have mild performance and durability isn't the greatest.
